Landing the first blow at PFR tonight is AEON NEXUS, and I am going to need three to five business days to recover from the battering.
Their dreadlocked bassist has both hands racing up and down the fretboard as their frontwoman roars, and I quickly realise that kneeling in front of a performer wearing a skirt could be misconstrued, so I dart off to the side as their crushing metalcore sends waves up to the back of the room. Her lows are outstanding, the drumming is phenomenal, and by the end of their set, you know that AEON NEXUS are destined for great things.

Coming up next is a fiery set from PYROKINESIS, who got my attention earlier this year with the crushing Unwritten. Their frontman is all smiles, so it’s a bit surprising when he tells us that he’s feeling slightly worse for wear … since he started today by day-drinking at a mate’s 30th. I’d talk smack, but I needed a nanna nap just to come out tonight, so I’ll just shut up. We help out with some gang vocals, and before we know it, their set is coming to a close.

Possibly the most metalcore-y of tonight’s lineup, NEW MILLION are full of beans (and massive choruses, apparently). This is their first time in Brisbane, and they’re loving their welcome party. Their bassist has been getting around with a GoPro on his chest like a police bodycam, and I imagine he’s looking through the footage right now and seeing a lot of smiling faces in the crowd, because their set kills. They get points for stage banter too, with their singer explaining away an onstage fuckup by saying “Sorry, I’ve had a lot of Tylenol today.”

TORIZON are not a new band, but they feel new. It’s been five years since I first interviewed the Brissie rockers, but with their new EP Meloria, I feel like they are finally making music worthy of their talents, barging through the overcrowded metalcore market to come out with something truly stunning … petalcore. Turning the agony of fertility complications into an exploration of loss, grief and hope, Meloria is a stunning piece of work, and they open tonight with the strongest track, first single Bloom. Mish’s vocals sound huge, and the instrumentation is ridiculously tight. At only nine songs, tonight’s set is short and sweet, and not without its surprises. A cover of Britney Spears classic Toxic brings the house down, before they bring things to a close with Echoes and Hold On.
