Another Round Of Lagerstein

A horde of pirates had gathered out the front of Crowbar Brisbane, waiting for the gangplank to the S.S. Pluderberg to be lowered, so they could come aboard and revel in all the pleasures and treasures that the night ahead promised.
Members of the LAGERSTEIN crew awaited atop the gantry to high five and welcome everyone aboard with an ‘Ahoy!’ Many of whom headed for the merch stand to get their hands on fresh loot, while many more went straight to the bar, ordering up Lager Lagers, and other liquid delights to fuel their night ahead.
Our first port of call would be to collect arguably the most dangerous cargo of the night, NUCLEASRSAURUS REX! Playing the theme to Jurassic Park as their entrance, chief Dino-Wrangler Mousey entered the stage and gave a quick shout out to Sam Neil, who had passed away earlier in the week. That sad note aside, they unleashed their havoc upon the rapidly growing crowd. Guitarist Chalky thrashed away on his guitar, keeping the local music shops in business by destroying strings at a rapid rate, as the rest of the band erupted around him like a volcano with enough force to black out the skies, and cause an extinction level event. If that wasn’t danger enough, their T-Rex mascot thundered onto the stage, and down into the audience, riling everyone up. Just as you thought things may be starting to calm down, Mother Junkst appeared with a beer bong, and poured one down its throat, starting the rampaging all over again!

Once NUCLEARSAURS REX had eventually been subdued and stored away safely in the cargo hold, BUCKLED were able to take their turn at the wheel. They may not have bought a T-Rex with them, but their performance wasn’t any less ferocious as the ‘cocktail’ punks slapped the audience upside the head with their abrasive sound. But what else would you expect from the self-proclaimed “Scarborough Street shantylords” from the wretched hive of scum and villainy known as Southport? Nah, Southport’s a nice enough place. I just couldn’t resist the urge to mash genres and sneak in a Star Wars reference, you old pirate!

The curtain closed across the stage after BUCKLES set, and people began either running to the bar for further refreshment, or cramming in closer to the stage in anticipation of seeing LAGERSTEIN return to the stage after two years in the gravy basket. Chants started up as the excitement continued to build, and finally the curtain peeled back to reveal the party pirates ready to rock and roll! I don’t know who had the bigger smiles on their faces, the band or the crowd, as they launched into set opener ‘Raise Your Steins’, and both beer bongs and tricorne hats were thrust up high towards the rafters. Trying to get around the crowd to take photos really felt like fighting the currents in rough seas, as the mass of swashbuckling merrymakers swayed fore and aft, port to starboard.

As Junkst had promised in our interview in the lead-up to the show, their set list contained a healthy mix of fan favourites and deep cuts, with jaunty jigs such as ‘Pirate Music Piracy’ and ‘Harpoon The Sky’, and no doubt Neil and The Beasts favourite, ‘The Shoey Song’ which saw them show the increasingly lubricated crowd just how it’s done. The party kept rolling with huge sing-nay-row-a-longs to ‘Lagerphone’, ‘Drink Til We Die’, and all the way up to the messy end of their set with ‘Beer Bong Song’. The audience, however, were not ready for the party to end (and let the Crowbar staff start swabbing the deck, no matter how badly it needed it), and called for the crew to return for one more song. The band returned from the galley of the S.S. Plunderberg to smash out their cover of 'A Land Downunder ’, to which I had hoped that maybe, just maybe Nollsie might have joined them. Clearly he just wanted to keep all his rum for himself, but thankfully LAGERSTEIN decided to take us to their own ‘Land Of Bundy’ before the call of ‘Land Ho’ was made, and it was time for us all to disembark.
Welcome back LAGESTEIN, just don’t leave it too long between drinks this time!
