“What a magical, ethereal, other-worldly, drawn-into-the-fairy-portal night of wonder. Days later, I am still in awe.” - Kahlia
Kahlia, a friend of mine with Autism, knowing that I am a veteran of the live music scene, asked if I could chaperone them to a show by an artist that they really wanted to see, PEACH PRC. Now, I like to consider myself a pretty well rounded metal head, I love Hip Hop, Synthwave, Funk, and Jazz, to name a few other genres, but Bubblegum Pop isn’t really in my lexicon. That said, when a friend asks for help, you help them, and, I figured if I’m going, then I may as well apply for accreditation and take some photos while I’m there.
With my application approved, some more friends of ours from the Autism community who are fans of PEACH PRC expressed their interest in coming too, so we assembled our posse that now included Lili and Emma, and headed into the Valley for the show. We had already organised accessibility seating for Kahlia, Lili, and Emma, and the staff guided them to their seats. The Fortitude Valley Music Hall crew are always so friendly, and I strongly recommend that anyone needing accommodations get in touch with them whenever they’re attending a show there. Safe and secure, I left them to make my way down to the stage to capture the opening act of the night, SALTY.

SALTY burst onto the stage with two backup dancers, whose dynamic movements, and infectious smiles, immediately threatened to steal the show. Live guitar (that we found out later was performed by her father) and drums gave the synthetic sounds of her music a real rock boost, as SALTY sang and danced her way through her set. Along the way, she announced the performance of her new single ‘The Eye’ that had just been aired for the first time some 20 minutes ago, which got a great reception from the crowd, along with other set highlights that included her performance of fan favourite track ‘Lucy’, and a cover of ‘Primadonna’ by MARINA AND THE DIAMONDS.

After SALTY’s performance, the stage went dark as the stagehands ran out to add further embellishment to the garden bed dressing that already adorned it. Extra foliage and flowers were laid down, building upon the moss covered risers and foldbacks that had already been placed prior to SALTY’s set, along with the most important addition, PEACH PRC’s dancing pole. To test the poles sturdiness, one spry stagehand took a quick spin, and earned themselves a huge applause from the crowd for it. With that final and most important check in place, the screen at the back lit up, showing lush forest and sparkling pixie dust, and PEACH PRC entered the stage.

Accompanied by her own team of backup dancers, a guitarist and bass/keys player, she launched straight up onto the pole, and began performing aerial acrobatics for her opening track, ‘Piper’. The next two songs are a bit of a blur for me, as I jockeyed for position in the photo pit as PEACH PRC stalked the stage, flanked by her dance accompaniment. PEACH’s Guitarist, who turned out to be the rather accomplished CHLOE DADD, came down to the front of the stage to dance and show off her guitar proficiency in greater detail, too. Before I knew it, my three songs were up, and it was time to leave the pit.

Out now in the crowd snapping wide shots, I recognised the next song she played, ‘Miss Erotica’ or, to a PEACH PRC layman like myself, ‘The Crazyhorse Song’. The film clip for this song features actor, James Lance, who some might recognise as ‘Trent Crimm from the Independent’ on Ted Lasso, and his face appeared on screen at the back, while the crowd was going wild to the song out the front. Announcing that she had made a trip to Bunnings, PEACH PRC produced a potted plant, and proceeded to hook it up to her synth via an oscilloscope to modulate its sound. This then provided the ambience for her song ‘Eucalyptus’, and the beginning of the portion of her set that she referred to as ‘My sad songs’. It was during these sad songs that I stopped viewing the show purely from a ‘documentarian’ perspective, and began to truly appreciate PEACH PRC as an artist outright. Her voice was purely phenomenal, like hairs standing on end, chills down your spine phenomenal.

With tear inducing tracks like ‘Loved You Before’ and ‘Pink’ now over, it was time to turn the dial back up to party for the final phase of the performance. The dancers came back out to get down to songs such as ‘Hold It For Her’ and ‘Shirley Barber’, and I found it particularly amusing to witness an audience with a large portion dressed as adorable fairies screaming out ‘Fuck you, Josh!’. PEACH PRC then said her goodbyes and left the stage, and it was time for us to leave her fairy realm behind, and return to the reality of the streets of Fortitude Valley outside.
